A main electric motor for a railway vehicle is supplied with AC power from an inverter circuit including a switching element formed by using a wide band gap semiconductor and is rotationally driven. The inverter circuit applies a voltage having a PWM waveform to the main electric motor for a railway vehicle in at least a part of the speed region of an electric vehicle. The stator of the main electric motor for a railway vehicle comprises: a ring-shaped stator core provided with a plurality of slots in a circumferential direction; and a stator winding that is formed by including coils wound around the stator core and housed in the slots and is configured in a three-phase star connection and by a parallel circuit having the same number of parallel circuits as the number of poles on a per phase basis.
