PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for width reduction press that greatly reduce a camber of a rolled sheet caused by width reduction, in a hot rolling process of a metal plate including a width reduction press process of a slab.SOLUTION: A method and an apparatus for width reduction press are characterized in that in a width reduction press process using a width reduction pressing apparatus having a pair of pressing tools for width reduction of a slab, even in the point of time when performing the width reduction of any position in the longitudinal direction of the slab, the width reduction is performed while restricting the displacement in the width direction of the slab at at least two positions in the longitudinal direction of the slab other than the press tool position at all times.
