PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a power supply for a power unit operating by a predetermined voltage.SOLUTION: An electric welding machine having an auxiliary power output section, and a method for controlling the auxiliary power output section are provided. A system includes a first secondary winding in circuit communication with a welder power output section and a second secondary winding in circuit communication with an auxiliary power supply having the auxiliary power output section. The auxiliary power supply includes an input section for monitoring the welder power output section to determine whether the welder power output section is on; a circuit for determining whether a surge or spike is present at the auxiliary power output section; and a circuit for limiting the available power to the auxiliary power output section if certain conditions are satisfied. The method includes the steps of: monitoring the demand on the auxiliary power output section and determining whether there is a surge in the demand on the auxiliary power output section above a first limit; and reducing the available power to the auxiliary power output section if the surge is above the first limit and the welding power output section is energized.
