PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve a problem in which a conventional PLC multiplexer/demultiplexer has difficulties to separate a mode with vertical odd-symmetric intensity distribution.SOLUTION: An optical multiplexer/demultiplexer of the present invention multiplexes a plurality of single mode signals into a multimode signal, or demultiplexes a multimode signal into a plurality of single mode signals. A plurality of single mode waveguides and a multimode waveguide are formed with a planar lightwave circuit. Thickness of a clad at a lower side of the core is one or more times the thickness of the core, and thickness of the clad at an upper side of the core is equal to or less than 25% of the thickness of the core.
