This wavelength conversion particle (1) is a particle which absorbs excitation light incident thereon and emits light having a longer wavelength than the excitation light. This wavelength conversion particle comprises a fluorescent substance particle (2) and a coating film (3) with which the surface of the fluorescent substance particle is covered and which comprises silicon oxide particles and niobium oxide particles as main components, the oxide particles having an average particle diameter of 1-20 nm. Furthermore, this wavelength conversion member (5) comprises the wavelength conversion particles and a light-transmitting medium (4) that has a lower refractive index than the fluorescent substance particles, the wavelength conversion particles being dispersed inside the light-transmitting medium.
