PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a novel and improved electric double layer capacitor which makes possible to increase an electrostatic capacitance per unit volume, i.e. an energy density in comparison to those achieved in the past while keeping the advantage of an electric double layer capacitor.SOLUTION: To solve the above problem, an electric double layer capacitor is provided according to one aspect of the invention, which comprises: a porous electrode having a half-value width of a maximum peak of one degree or larger where the X-ray diffraction intensity reaches the maximum; and an electrolyte including electrolytic ions capable of being adsorbed and released by the porous electrode.
