A device for needling fibrous batts comprises a needle board 1 provided with barbed needles 2 arranged in longitudinal rows and a pair of guide plates 7, 9 between which the batt passes, the needles 2 passing through the upper plate 9 and the lower plate 7 being covered with particulate material, e.g. iron shot, to such a depth that in operation the needles cannot strike the upper surface of the plate 7. The plate 7 is preferably a shallow metal tray. The plate 9, preferably of metal, has slots therein to register with the needle rows. Ribs 8 separate the slots. To prevent the shot being pinched up by the batt the shot may be magnetized to cling together. Alternatively, the tray 7 together with the shot may be vibrated. |
