摘要 The present invention provides a process to economically convert carbon dioxide to oxalic acid and derivatives, such as ethylene glycol and olefins. Oxalic acid is provided, characterized by a 14?C content that is about the same as the 14?C content of atmospheric CO?2#191. In some variations, carbon dioxide and water are electrochemically converted to oxalic acid by electrolyzing water to produce dilute protons and oxygen; converting the dilute protons to hydrogen; oxidizing the hydrogen to produce concentrated protons in an acidic solution; reacting the carbon dioxide electrolytically with a lithium salt, to generate lithium oxalate; alternately loading an ion exchange material with the lithium oxalate or the acidic solution, to generate oxalic acid or the lithium salt, respectively; recovering the oxalic acid; and recycling the lithium salt. Renewable and sustainable oxalic acid enables a promising biorefinery platform.
