Provided are a variable magnification optical system, an optical device, and a method for producing the variable magnification optical system. The variable magnification optical system has, in order from the object side, a positive first lens group (G1), a negative second lens group (G2), an aperture stop (S), a positive third lens group (G3), and a positive fourth lens group (G4). When changing magnification from a wide-angle end to a telephoto end, the interval between the first lens group (G1) and the second lens group (G2), the interval between the second lens group (G2) and the aperture stop (S), the interval between the aperture stop (S) and the third lens group (G3), and the interval between the third lens group (G3) and the fourth lens group (G4) change. The distance between the aperture stop (S) and the fourth lens group (G4) is fixed. The variable magnification optical system is compact, and has a high zoom ratio and high optical performance as a result of satisfying a prescribed conditional expression. |
