918,341. Chucks. JACOBS MANUFACTURING CO. May 11, 1961 [June 21, 1960], No. 17213/61. Class 83 (3). A collet comprises a plurality of spaced jaws 22 connected by resilient links 44, each having a head and a socket which snap into one another. A piece of bent wire 64 is inserted in a socket before snapping in a link to enable air to escape. The collet is closed by a ring 30 moved downwardly by screws 38. Lips 72, 74 on the links prevent the ingress of chips during machining. In a modified construction 78, Fig. 7, each link has two heads and the base is slightly tapered to assist in forming the assembly into a circular form. In a further modification, each link-head 96, Fig. 14, is inserted through a hole in a jaw 84 and into the socket of the next link before a collar 106 is moved to enclose the head and prevent the socket from expanding to permit disengagement. |
