The invention comprises 2,3,5,6-tetra-amino-1,4-benzoquinone and the preparation thereof by reacting a 2,3,5,6-tetrahalogeno-1,4-benzoquinone with potassium phthalimide and reacting the product so obtained with hydrazine. The product may be purified by reduction to 2,3,5,6-tetra-aminohydroquinone tetrahydrochloride and reoxidation of the latter. Imidazoles of the general formula: <FORM:0915513/IV (b)/1> in which R1 and R2 are aliphatic radicals are prepared by reacting the tetraaminobenzoquinone with an acylating agent, e.g. acetic anhydride, and treating the bis-acetyl compound so produced with an acid.
