Disclosed are a method and device for defining an element field, which relate to the technical field of communications. The method comprises: adding a beacon number or adding a beacon number and a target station for an element field, the beacon number being used for indicating the number of beacon frame periods spaced from the time when the station receives a beacon frame to which the element field is subordinate, to the occurrence of a triggered event, the element field comprising an element identification number, a length and content of the triggered event from the field beginning to the field end in sequence (101); and broadcasting the beacon frame carrying the element field (102). The present invention is applicable to the interaction between an access point and a station of a wireless local area network system.
