The invention comprises organotin compounds in which the tin atom is bound directly on the one hand to m hydrocarbon groups (where m is an integer from 1 to 3) and on the other hand, directly to one carboxylic group of each of (4-m) dicarboxylic acid, the other carboxylic groups of the dicarboxylic acid being bound directly to the sulphur atom of an ester of a mercaptosubstituted carboxylic acid. The compound may have the general formula Rm-Sn(Y)4-m wherein R is an alkyl, cycloalkyl or aryl radical, m is an integer from 1 to 3 and Y represents the group -(OOC-COSR11) or the group -(OOC-R1-COSR11) wherein R1 is an aliphatic, alicyclic or aromatic bivalent hydrocarbon radical and R11 is an aliphatic, alicyclic, aromatic or heterocyclic radical which contains 1 or 2 ester groups. They may be prepared by reacting a dicarboxylic acid (preferably oxalic acid or an acid of formula R1(COOH)2 where R1 is as above defined) or a functional derivative thereof with an ester of a mercapto-substituted carboxylic acid of formula HS-R11 in which R11 is as above, and then reacting the product with an organotin oxide, hydroxide or halide having 1, 2 or 3 alkyl, cycloalkyl or aryl radicals per tin atom, which radicals may be the same or different. The dicarboxylic acid is preferably a saturated C2-C10 acid or an unsaturated C4-C8 acid such as maleic acid. The ester of the mercapto-substituted carboxylic acid is preferably an alkyl ester of a mercaptosubstituted alkyl monocarboxylic acid (e.g. thioglycollic acid or thiopropionic acid) or an alkyl ester of a mercapto-substituted alkyl dicarboxylic acid (e.g. thiomalic acid). Mono-esters of dicarboxylic acids with mercapto-substituted carboxylic acid esters. The following intermediates are described: maleic anhydride with di-n-butylthiomalate, n-butyl thiopropionate and with n-octylthioglycollate; succinic anhydride with diethylthiomalate; phthalic anhydride with dimethylthiomalate; hexahydrophthalic anhydride with thiophene-2-carboxylic acid ethyl ester; glutaric anhydride with di-n-butylthiomalate; citraconic anhydride with di-n-butylthiomalate; glutaconic anhydride with n-laurylthioglycollate; itaconic anhydride with n-octylthiopropionate; maleic acid chloride with sodium di-n-butylthiomalate; fumaric acid chloride with sodium n-butylthiopropionate; adipic acid chloride with sodium di-n-butylthiomalate; terephthalic acid chloride with sodium n-butylthiopropionate and isophthalic acid chloride with sodium n-butylthioglycollate. |
