The invention concerns techniques for authenticating a consignee or recipient of a parcel. A device 100 including an imaging module, processors, and an output module would typically implement the techniques. The imaging module images a first indicia (e.g. 2D barcode) 121, found on a parcel 105, and a second indicia 141 that is separate from the parcel, to obtain representations of the first and second indicia. The processors process the representations of the first and second indicia to determine a first key specified by the first indicia and a second key specified by the second indicia. The processors also determine whether the second key corresponds with (i.e. matches) the first key, and authenticates a consignee that provided the second indicia as an authorized recipient of the parcel based on the determination of whether the second key corresponds with the first key. The output module then indicates whether the one or more processors authenticate the consignee as the authorized recipient of the parcel. The keys may be encrypted, with the second key comprising a decryption key for the first key. Independent claims are also included for a method and device for generating the two keys involved in the process described above. |
