956,518. Rivets. HUCK MANUFACTURING CO. April 4, 1962 [Oct. 3, 1961], No. 12918/62. Heading F2H. [Also in Division B3] A riveted fastening for securing two sheets 1 and 2 comprises a smooth cylindrical pin 5 with a preformed head 7 and stem 8 which is positioned through aligned holes in said sheets. A tubular collar 6 is slid over the pin stem so that the collar, sheets and pin head are in abutted relationship. The collar is formed with annular tapered portions 9, 10 at opposite ends thereof and the bore is provided with annular grooves 11 and projections 12 and circumferentially positioned longitudinal spaces 15, the latter permitting radial contraction of the collar during swaging. Annular end ribs 13, 14 project inwardly farther than the projections 12 and have sharper edges. The internal portion of the collar including projections 12 and ribs 13, 14 is harder than its immediately adjacent exterior portion and the surface of the pin stem, so that a driving tool 16 swages said external portion and presses the harder projections in to the surface of the pin stem, thus looking the collar to the stem. The tool operation being such that rib 13 cuts deeper into the pin stem to form a weaker plane therein and whereat the excess stem may be broken off by the tool at the end of the swaging operation. Another embodiment includes a collar of two parts comprising an outer soft sleeve and a hard ribbed inner portion, which are located coaxially. Specification 629,098 and Application 7210/63 are referred to. |
