In a main crank identification control, a crank angle is identified based on output of a signal corresponding to a reference rotational phase of a crankshaft from a crank sensor. In a cam angle identification control, a predetermined rotational phase of an intake camshaft is identified based on output of a signal corresponding to the predetermined rotational phase of the intake camshaft from an intake cam sensor. When the predetermined rotational phase of the intake camshaft is identified through the cam angle identification control after the crank angle has been identified by the main crank angle identification control, the relationship between the predetermined rotational phase of the intake camshaft and the crank angle is learned through learning control. If the predetermined rotational phase of the intake camshaft is identified through the cam angle identification control with the crank angle unidentified, the crank angle is identified based on the predetermined rotational phase of the intake camshaft and the relationship learned through the learning control in sub-crank angle identification control. |
