Class 103(4) Sliding wall panels 19, Figs. 6, 6a, of a railroad freight car which comprise beams 20, 21 extend in a common plane between corner posts 4, Fig. 1, and intermediate posts 5 to enclose the car sides by sliding past posts 5 by means of rear rollers 48, which engage overhead support rails 26 on car-connecting beams 7 and by front rollers 47 which travel on rails 27, or travel first of all a short distance on intermediate rails 50 which are on the posts 5 in alignment with the rails 27. The rails 26 are bent at their ends near the corner posts 4 so that as rollers 48 roll therealong upon closure of a panel 19, the panel moves inwardly from a position in which it can slide past the other panel to a position in a common plane therewith. A lever 29 pivots about a shaft 28 having a claw 30 which engages a bolt on each of the end portions of the panels adjacent the posts 5 in the common plane with each other when in the closed position to swing the panels to their sliding position outside the common plane to allow movement past the post 5 and the other panel lever 29. The lower edges of the panels have guide rollers 51 and locking means are provided on the levers which comprise a projection which engages a corresponding opening in the panel 19 with the lever against the panel in its closed position. At one end each panel 19 has a sleeve 34, Fig. 2, which has a ram 42 slidably positioned therein which co-operates with a spring 41 in a vertical recess 9 in the corner post 4 when in the closed position and the panel is also in contact with a surface 10 of the recess so that the surface forms a thrust bearing for any load from within the car. A flange 11 on the post 4 together with the edge of the panel 19 forms a seal. The panels 19 each have at their other ends a closure plate with a sealing flange 25 parallel to the panel 19 which engages around a leg on the central posts 5 by means of a nose 23 to form a seal which is resiliently secured in this position by means of the springs 41 at the other end of the panel and by the locking means. The end walls may comprise a number of panels 6 extending between the corner posts 4; a multipanel door 93, Fig. 10, braced by a bar 99, the panels being connected by hinges 94 to the corner posts and having a central, hinged door 92, or the end walls may comprise an upper part hinged at its lower edge to a rigid lower portion.
