<p>The invention relates to a clear solution in water of an attenuated rabies live virus vaccine substantially free from extraneous animal tissue and giving effective protection by the standard quinea pig intramuscular test for potency, or a dry vaccine for dilution with water to produce said clear solution. The vaccine is prepared by propagating a live rabies virus in a culture medium of chicken embryo tissue cells containing at least 0.5 and less than 5% of collagen, e.g. gelatin hydrolysed to cold water solubility but not to the peptone stage. The tissue cells may be treated with trypsin or pancreatin before culturing. A typical medium contains 10% tryptose phosphate broth, 2% soluble hydrolysed gelatin and 0.5% lactalbumin hydrolysate in Earle's balanced salt solution. Cultivation is at 30-40 DEG C. and preferably 37 DEG C. Propagation is effected for not more than a day, spent medium is removed, fresh culture medium added to the tissue culture cells and propagation resumed until a harvestable litre of virus is obtained, e.g. 3 to 5 days.
