The turbocharger has a flow-through air duct section (3) which is provided with a support portion (4) that is mounted with a rotor assembly (5). A turbine wheel is rotationally connected to a shaft (7) that is connected to the compressor wheel (6) that is provided with a wheel well (8). A radial bearing (9) is provided for supporting the rotor assembly in the support section. A relief device self-adjusts compensation of the turbine wheel, such that compressor wheel is operated by axial forces. An independent claim is included for method for operating exhaust gas turbocharger.
