Apparatus for moulding soles on to uppers comprises a pair of lasts 36 mounted one each end of a piston 34 movable in a cylinder 32 mounted on a horizontal shaft 28 for rotation to bring first one and then the other last 36 into a position above the mould 12, the last then being lowered on to the mould 12 which is split medially so that the halves may be moved together to form a mould cavity and apart to permit removal of the finished shoe. The pneumatically operated control system includes control valves V1, V2 and four motors. The cycle consists of the following steps, the mould halves are separated, a rack 48 and pinion 50 device for causing rotation of the lasts about the horizontal shaft is disconnected, the piston 34 carrying the lasts 36 rises, the rack 48 is rocked back into engagement with the pinion 50 fastened to the shaft 28, so that the shaft 28 is rotated and hence the last 36 with the finished shoe is moved to the top and vice versa. Unvulcanized sole blanks can be placed between the mould halves or thermoplastic material can be injected into the mould. The use of a plurality of apparatuses on a rotary table or endless belt is suggested.
