The method involves adjusting an adjustment element between a rest position and a use position of a motor vehicle (S1) for varying an outer contour of a seating system. First and second images visualizing the rest and use positions of the element of the vehicle are displayed on a display of the vehicle when the element is set in the rest and use positions, respectively. The first image is displayed instead of the second image if the element is adjusted into the rest position, and the second image is displayed instead of the first image if the element is adjusted into the use position. The adjustment element is designed as a volume element. An independent claim is also included for a seating system of a motor vehicle.
