The method involves detecting a location (BM) of a metal strip (B) with respect to a transport region (2) comprised by a rolling mill (1), where the transport region transports the metal strip. The metal strip is influenced by a working roller (3) during passage through the rolling mill. A lubricant is applied to the working roller based on the detected strip location for controlling and/or regulating the location of the metal strip. The location of the metal strip is approximated to a transport middle axis of the transport region.
