The drive unit (1) has an internal combustion engine (2), an electric machine (3) and a transmission (4), where a transmission-internal or transmission-external multiple disk clutch (6) is switched between a shaft of the internal combustion engine and a shaft of the transmission. The multiple disk clutch is gradually closed to start of the internal combustion engine during the transition from a purely electric drive of the hybrid vehicle in the hybrid drive of the hybrid vehicle such that the internal combustion engine transfers a torque from a portion of an inner plate to an outer plate. An independent claim is included for a method for operating a drive unit.
