964,546. Laminates. FMC. CORPORATION. March 22, 1962 [April 27, 1961], No. 10961/62. Heading B5N. Decorative laminates comprising a sheet of resin-impregnated decorative paper bonded to a rigid core, for example of plywood, hardboard, particle board, cement-asbestos board or gypsum board, are made by densifying the paper by supercalendering, impregnating it with a solution in a volatile solvent of diallyl or dimethallyl orthophthalate or isophthalate containing 90-98% of a thermoplastic polymer of the above materials (m.w. 2500-25,000), 2-10% of the monomer, and a catalytic amount (not less than 1%, preferably 2-5%) of an organic peroxide, drying the paper to 53-67 % of its weight of resin, and laminating it to the core material with heating and pressure sufficient to cure the resin to the thermoset stage. An unpigmented overlay paper may be similarly treated and applied over the decorative paper before the laminating step. To avoid distortion of some cores, a phenolic resinimpregnated kraft paper layer may be applied to the underside of the core with an intermediate separator layer of glassine paper. Pressing is preferably effected with highly polished plates and produces laminates with a high and uniform surface gloss. The impregnated and dried papers are storable before use. U.S.A. Specifications 2,370,578 and 2,377,095 are referred to.
|
