[Also in Divisions B8 and E2] Apparatus for heat sealing the synthetic plastic bases of a set of snap fastener members to an article e.g. baby pants, raincoats, comprises a plurality of snap fastener member applying and heat sealing mechanisms operable to position the bases against the article, a supporting stand for the mechanisms including means for supporting the mechanisms in spaced relation so as to be relatively adjustable whereby a plurality of members may be applied simultaneously in any desired space relation on the article, the applying mechanisms each having a device for moving the fastener members into engagement with the article, and releasable clamping means for securing the mechanisms in adjusted position on the guide means. The stand for each mechanism comprises parallel bars 2, Fig. 6, attached at one end to a common support and at the other end to a control cabinet 4. A power supply means 6 is associated with each mechanism 1. The fastener members 10 may be in the form of chains fed from reels 12 by means of a rotary clutch operated member 61, Fig. 11, the members being picked up in succession by an upper member 7 having a holding device 17 and moved down on to the work 37 by an air cylinder 8. The device 17 is of metal carried by an insulating sleeve 63 and at the bottom of its travel makes contact with a pivoted contact 67 connected to one side of the power supply, the other side of which is connected to the member 18 arranged below the work 37. Common timing mechanisms for the power supply and the air cylinder are provided, the member 7 being retracted by the cylinder 8 after the sealing is completed. Each sealing mechanism is secured to the bars 2 by means of a bolt 55, Fig. 12, carrying a pivoted lever 15 having a cam portion which bears against a fixed plate 14. For adjustment of the mechanisms laterally, each is secured to a plate 3 bearing on the rods 2 by a bolt 52 working in a slot in the plate 13. By this means a plurality of fastener members may be secured to the work in a non-linear arrangement. |
