The system (1) has a fuel cell (3) comprising an anode compartment (4) and a cathode compartment (5). A carbon dioxide storage volume (16) i.e. compressed gas storage such as carbondioxide cartridge, is arranged in fluid connection to the cathode compartment. The carbon dioxide storage volume is connected with a vent pipe (8) of a cathode space (5) over a valve device (17). The carbondioxide storage volume is connected with a posterior end of the cathode compartment in flow direction of air flowing through the cathode compartment. An independent claim is also included for a method for starting a fuel cell system.
