The motor car (1) has an electrically assisted power steering apparatus (9) with a ball screw (6). A sensor (8) is adapted to detect a vibration of the steering apparatus during a change in steering angle and to generate a sensor signal representing the vibration, transmitted to a control unit (7). The control unit is adapted to compare the sensor signal with a threshold valve and to determine an error condition, when the sensor signal is greater than the threshold value. The sensor is an acceleration sensor of an airbag deployment system (13) of the motor car.
