The method involves executing an application of a communicating device. An interaction is established between an application of a communicating device and a communication unit by coupling the application to a high level driver of a communication connector of the communication unit by a predetermined programming interface using a modular infrastructure. Data is communicated between the application and the communication connector. The communicating device is upgraded with respect to the utilization of a new communication protocol of a network. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a communicating device adapted to be connected to a network, comprising an application (2) an interface unit adapted to be connected to a communicating device to establish a communication with a network using a new communication protocol.
