A ring frame ( 113 ) in a ring spinning machine is provided with an optical sensor for scanning the state of a spinning position. The sensor comprises a light beam transmitter ( 236 ) and a light beam receiver ( 238 ) for receiving light which is emitted by the transmitter ( 26 ) and reflected by a part in the spinning position, in particular from a traveller circulating on a spinning ring. The sensor is characterised in that the transmitter ( 236 ) and the receiver ( 238 ) are carried by a common carrier ( 202 ). The carrier ( 20 ) can be provided with a plurality of housings ( 212 ), whereby each housing ( 212 ) accommodates a sensor (transmitter/receiver pair). The housing ( 212 ) is provided for the transmitter ( 236 ) and the receiver ( 238 ) with a light-permeable part ( 240, 242 ) in each case, which can be formed as a optical lens.
