Disclosed are an image forming apparatus and a method of controlling the same. The purpose of the present invention is to prevent the contamination and the electrical nonuniformity of a transfer roller by performing the initialization of filling cells which are formed on the surface of the transfer roller with a toner. For this, a method of controlling an image forming apparatus according to the present invention includes determining whether a transfer roller mounted on the image forming apparatus is a new product or not; and performing the transfer roller initialization for transferring a developer to the surface of the transfer roller when the transfer roller is a new product and filling the cells formed on the surface of the transfer roller with the developer.
