Reduction gearing in a casing 5 is pivotally mounted on a driven shaft 11 of a hoist drum 12, and torque reaction is provided by a casing rib 21 embedded in a fixed block 22 of elastic material. The casing 5 contains coaxial input and output gears 6, 10 and layshaft gears 7, 9. The gearing is driven from a motor 1 through an elastic coupling 3. The pivotal movements of the casing 5 may be utilized to indicate the direction and magnitude of the torque reaction.
