The present invention relates to a method for improving the quality of acquired images by physically-based reflection separation. The purpose of the present invention is to provide a method for improving the quality of acquired images by physically-based reflection separation, which is capable of handling double-sided reflection and spatially-varying mixing coefficients of both layers in a physically-based reflection model, and being completely automatic. To achieve the purpose, the method of the present invention comprises the steps of: (a) extracting a pair of orthogonal images from three polarized images respectively captured at polarizing angles spaced apart at a predetermined angle; (b) separating a reflective layer and a background layer from each of the orthogonal images by assuming a spatially-varying incident angle; (c) purifying the reflective layer and the background layer by applying the constrained optimization of multi-scales; and (d) performing post-processing of results through the suppression of edges so as to remove edges remaining on the reflective layer and the background layer purified in the (c) step.
