A method of mounting a ball or roller bearing 2 comprises inserting between the bearing and the bore of a housing 1 a thin cylindrical sleeve 3 which extends axially beyond the housing at each end, the extended ends of the sleeve being slit axially to form tongues 6 and 6 1 which are alternately radially bent in and out on to the face of the outer race and the support respectively to axially secure the bearing in the housing. The faces of the support are recessed around the periphery of the bore to accommodate protecting washers 5 and 5<SP>1</SP>. In an alternative embodiment a thicker sleeve formed with shoulders at each end is used when the support bore is damaged during the removal of a previous bearing. |
