A C1- 6 alkyl ester of heparin (claimed per se) is produced by esterifying a long-chain alkyl or aralkyl C9-27 quaternary ammonium salt, e.g. the "Hyamine 1622", "Hyamine 2389", "Cequartyl BE", "Arquad 2C", or "Zephirol" salt. Esterification may be effected with diazomethane. In the example, sodium heparinate and "Hyamine 1622" are interacted in aqueous solution to produce the acid hyamine salt which is reacted with diazomethane in methylene chloride to produce the methyl ester. After evaporation of the solvent, the ester is dissolved in butanol, extracted with aqueous potassium or sodium acetate, and precipitated as the potassium or sodium salt with ethanol. Specification 904,112 also is referred to.
