Cyclo-octadiene-1,3 is obtained by the isomerization of the -1,5 isomer by heating in the presence of palladium chloride. The catalyst may be in the form of its complex with cyclo-octadiene, either -1,3 or -1,5, of the formula C8H12PdCl2 obtained by reaction of cyclo-octadiene with a solution of palladium chloride in aqueous hydrochloric acid followed by recrystallization from glacial acetic acid. The amount of catalyst may be 1-3% wt. of the cyclo-octadiene and the reactants are refluxed in nitrogen or argon. Palladium is precipitated and hydrogen chloride evolved. The diene is purified by distillation. |
