The method involves generating an image sequence (20) of a hand (28) of a user of an electronic device (16) by a camera (14), and detecting position of the hand in an area through a detection device (30) based on the sequence. Position of a selection element e.g. selection field (44), is determined based on the position of the hand. Relative position of a finger (38) of the hand is determined with respect to an area (46) of the hand by the detection device based on the sequence, and function of the electronic device is activated by a control device (32) based on the relative position. The camera is designed as an infrared camera or photonic mixer device-camera. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a motor vehicle (2) a computer program product with a program code for executing a method for controlling a selection element.
