A method for executing handover in a multi-carrier wireless communication system is provided to overcome a bad channel environment at a cell boundary and improve the quality of data reception as an MS(Mobile Station), which is operating in band AMC mode in a BWA(Broadband Wireless Access) system, carries out MDHO(Macro Diversity HandOver). An MS in band AMC mode receives a MOB_NBR-ADV message containing information about neighbor BSs from a serving BS(S31). Based on the MOB_NBR-ADV message, the MS scans the neighbor BSs(S32). Then the MS adds a specific BS to a diversity set among the neighbor BSs, and transmits a MOB_MSHO-REQ message to the serving BS(S33). Receiving the MOB_MSHO-REQ message, the serving BS judges whether to accept the MS's handover request(S34). In the case of accepting the handover request, the serving BS transmits a MOB_BSHO-RSP message to the MS, including information to indicate that the serving BS will serve as an anchor BS(S35). The anchor BS allocates a band having the best channel condition to the MS, based on channel quality measurement results(S36). The specific neighbor BS also allocates the optimum band to the MS(S37). The MS transmits a MOB_HO-IND message to the anchor BS in order to inform the anchor BS that handover will be started(S38). |
