PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a particulate water absorbent excellent in handleability as a powder and the particulate water absorbent having high absorption performance in a wide range of salt concentrations and suitable for various applications.SOLUTION: A particulate water absorbent contains a polyacrylic acid (salt)-based water absorbing resin containing surfactant as a main constituent, and the surfactant is a reactive surfactant containing functional groups other than hydroxyl groups, which may react with a carboxyl group and a surface tension of the absorbent is 55 to 73 mN/m and a 20 mass% saline vertical absorption index is 1.5 to 10.0 [g/g].
