Disclosed are a method and a device for detecting the traveling direction of a vehicle with an automatic transmission. The present invention deduces the traveling direction of a vehicle based on wheel speed information on a wheel speed sensor installed on a wheel, rotational speed information of a clutch which is installed on the input shaft of the transmission which delivers engine power to the automatic transmission and which operates as an operation element, and information on the shifting terminal of an inhibitor switch. The present invention prevents an engine stall phenomenon due to slip between an engine and the transmission, improves stability due to engine-off by controlling slip of the transmission, and improves shifting quality based on deduced traveling direction of a vehicle.
