[Also in Division D1] Two sheets 15, 16 of fabric, each having thermoplastic coatings on both sides, are joined together by laying the sheet 15 upon the sheet 16 with an edge of each in registration, stitching the sheets 15, 16 together at 14 on a line parallel with the registering edges to form a flap F, folding back the sheet 15 to overlie the flap F, and simultaneously welding together the contacting thermoplastic coatings of the two components of the flap F and the thermoplastic coating on the underside of the folded-back sheet 15 to the facing thermoplastic coating of the flap F. The fold formed in the sheet 15 must overlie the stitching 14 on the remote side of the flap F as indicated at 17. The welding may be effected by high-frequency electric heat welding. The invention is applicable to forming seams in a motor vehicle hood. |
