PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device capable of improving display quality, and a method for setting a retardation of the device.SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device includes: a first substrate including a common electrode formed over from first to third pixels, a first pixel electrode formed in the first pixel and opposing to the common electrode, a second pixel electrode formed in the second pixel and opposing to the common electrode, and a third pixel electrode formed in the third pixel and opposing to the common electrode; a second substrate including a blue color filter formed in the first pixel, a green color filter formed in the second pixel, and a red color filter formed in the third pixel, and forming a cell gap between itself and the first substrate; and a liquid crystal layer held in the cell gap and formed of a liquid crystal material having a negative dielectric constant anisotropy, in which a retardation defined by &Dgr;n×d, where d represents the cell gap and &Dgr;n represents a refractive index anisotropy of the liquid crystal material, is 304 nm or more and 407 nm or less. |
