A chlorinated rubbery copolymer of a major proportion of an isoolefin with a minor proportion of a multiolefin containing 0,1 to 10% chlorine is heat-interacted with carbon black at 200 DEG -500 DEG F. for a time of 5 minutes to 12 hours, sufficient for interaction to take place, the conditions being such that neither thermal degradation nor vulvanisation of the chlorinated butyl rubber takes place. The rubbery copolymer may be derived from an isoolefin such as isobutylene and a multiolefin such as isoprene, butadiene, dimethyl butadiene or piperylene and is chlorinated with the usual chlorinating agents such as chlorine, alkali metal hypochlorites, sulphur chlorides, tri-chlorophenol chloride and Nchloro-compounds acting either upon the solid copolymer or in solution. The carbon black may be a channel, furnace, thermal or lamp black. A promoter, e.g. sulphur, nitroso compounds, quinone dioximes and their derivatives, may be used but is not essential for the reaction with carbon black. The polymer product, after heating with the carbon black, may be cured in the presence of the usual agents such as zinc oxide, sulphur, thiuram disulphides, dithiocarbamates, benzothiazyl disulphide, lead oxide, quinone dioximes, stearic acid and antioxidants, e.g. N-lauroyl p-amino phenol, as well as various fillers such as clays, silica and titanium dioxide and plasticisers, e.g. hydrocarbon oils.
