In a steering wheel, a first stage of impact energy absorption is provided by flexing of spokes 13 set at an angle to the normal plane of the rim 12 which is axially spaced from the wheel hub 14, a second stage of energy absorption being provided by energy absorbing material 24. The spring spokes 13 are welded to the hub 14 and the rim 12 and the assembly is covered with hard rubber orthe like. A dished plate 22 is also welded to the hub 14 and has secured thereto, by screws 28, a frustoconical core 24 of substantially rigid foam plastic covered by a soft cushion pad 25. The core 24 extends from the hub to a plane intermediate the hub and the plane of the rim. The spoke coverings 47 may house switches 46. |
