An electric motor or generator stator or rotor comprises a circumferential support forming a back iron having a protrusion 210 and a tooth 300 arranged to receive coil windings, wherein the tooth includes a recess to receive the protrusion 210, and the protrusion and the recess in the tooth are arranged to have a cavity or channel 220,330 formed on an adjacent surface of the recess and the protrusion when the protrusion is housed in the recess, wherein a retaining material 490 is placed between the cavities or channels formed on the adjacent surfaces of the recess and the protrusion. The material may be a cured polymer (e.g. an epoxy resin), polyurethane potting material or a silicone potting material or alternative a solid retaining pin may be employed. An adhesive may be applied to both or either of the surfaces of the protrusion or the recess. The tooth may have an injection moulded plastics insulating layer 400 having good thermal conductivity e.g. a thermally conductive liquid crystal polymer, end members 460 having greater mechanical strength e.g. nylon. The end members include wire guiding members 470 and channels 480 for introducing the material to the channel between tooth and projection. |
