<p>The present invention describes a device 10 for use as a support for a body part, which reduces the risk of a patient developing pressure ulcers and/or prevents the worsening of existing ulcers. The device comprises support having upper and lower surfaces 2a, 2b, wherein the upper surface includes a plurality of individual cushioning elements, or support modules 32. The support device may comprise of a deformable and/or resilient material, and may comprise a number of zones or regions, each with different relative deformability. The support device may also comprise a rigid base from which one or more support members 6 extend. The length of each support member may be manually or automatically adjusted allowing the height of the support device to be varied to suit the patients requirements. The height adjust mechanism may comprise a remotely controlled powered means, or may include compressible telescopic struts employing springs 14 or hydraulics, such that as the patient lowers his/her legs onto the support, the height of the support is adjusted automatically.</p> |
