<PICT:0980082/C1/1> In a glass-metal seal, leads 14 are located relative to a retaining metal element 16 by the vitreous material 15 and retained in position during firing by placing the ends 18 in a mat 34 of fibrous material. The vitreous material 15 is preferably formed by placing the element 16 in a mould and filling it with powdered glass which is compacted by a die, the die and mould having bores in which, respectively, the leads 14 slide and the ends 18 are anchored. Alternatively, an apertured disc D of glass may be used. The mat 34 may be of fibres of kaolin, zirconia or a mixture of alumina and silica. The leads 18 are connected by nickel wires to a germanium wafer transistor. |
