A pair of axial piston pumps is mounted in a housing 1 having an input shaft 7 carrying a gear 5 which meshes with gears 6 on the pump shafts. The pump shaft bearings 15 are mounted in bushes 14 inserted in apertures in the partition wall 2 and each pump comprising shaft 10, gear 6, bearing 15 and bush 14 is inserted through an end opening having a cover-plate 13. The gear 5 is assembled on the shaft 7 by passing the gear through one of the apertures for the bushes 14. The housing has two seatings 22, to one or both of which may be secured stroke control devices 26. When only one device is used it is connected through a changeover valve 28 to two pipes 21 connected to the pump outlets the valve 28 selecting the higher of the two pressures, and the controlled members (bodies 11) of the pumps are connected together. When individual control is required each pipe 21 is connected to a separate device 26 on each seating 22. Each pump cylinder housing 11 is maintained full of liquid by an auxiliary pump and the inlet valve part communicates directly with the interior of the housing.
