[Also in Division E2] A ratchet device associated with a pull cord for the lock of an artificial elbow prevents the return movement of the lock after each alternate pull on the cord, so that the joint is left free. A locking member 7, Fig. 1, attached to a lever 8 pivoted at 9, normally engages a toothed sector 6 to prevent movement of the forearm 3 about its pivot 4, but may be withdrawn by a pull exerted on a cord 10, 15 in which is incorporated the ratchet device 13. This comprises a slidable link 12, Fig. 4, to which the cord sections are attached and which carries two spring pawls 27, 29 for engagement with a ratchet wheel 24, rotatable on a base member 16. Each pull towards the right and subsequent release causes the pawls to rotate the ratchet through 45 degrees, together with a square abutment member 26, the diagonal of which is longer than the width of a reduced slot 21 in the member 12. Thus, after each alternate pull on the cord, the shoulders of this slot abut against the member 26 and prevent the return of the locking bolt but, after the intervening pulls, the slot 21 is able to pass along the flats on the member 26 so that the lock is fully engaged.
