PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for operating a blast furnace, which can prevent a furnace condition from falling in a bad condition when an ordinary blast furnace is operated in a low RAR, particularly can prevent the temperature of a charged material from unsatisfactorily rising in the furnace top part, can heat and pressurize a gas blown from a shaft portion to a necessary temperature and pressure with little energy, and can enhance the economical efficiency and effect of the low RAR operation. SOLUTION: This operation method includes extracting a part of a blast furnace gas G<SB>0</SB>which is introduced into a gas cleaning apparatus after having been exhausted from the furnace top part and introducing the gas into a combustion furnace, in the operation of the blast furnace, which sends air or oxygen-enriched air from a tuyere; preheating the blast furnace gas G<SB>0</SB>by burning carbon which is contained in the blast furnace gas as a part of dust, as a part of fuel in the combustion furnace; and blowing this preheated gas into the blast furnace from the gas-blowing part provided in the shaft portion.
