A direct-image paper base planographic printing plate comprises a high wet-strength paper base serving as the support of said plate, a continuous microporous intermediate coating on said base consisting of from 10 to 50 parts of adhesive binder per 100 parts of mineral pigment and a continuous top coating over said intermediate coating consisting of alkalistabilized colloidal silica. The mineral pigment of the intermediate coating consists of from 20 to 40 parts of zinc oxide (all parts are by weight) and from 80 to 60 parts of hydrous clay whilst the adhesive binder is a zinc ammonia casein complex containing from 1 to 6% of zinc metal by weight of the casein. The silica particles of the colloidal silica are coated by the stabilizing alkali and have a silica to alkali ratio of from 60:1 to 130:1, the silica being deposited from aqueous colloidal dispersion at alkaline pH by treating with volatile acid, evaporating and calendering after drying. The microporous intermediate coating provides adequate " tooth " for imaged impression from a type writer with the zinc therein resisting discolouration of the unimaged portions when used as a direct-image printing master. The paper base support may be poster board primed with a coating mixture of a copolymer of butadiene and styrene with polystyrene. The microporous coating may contain 75 parts of kaolinite and 25 parts of zinc oxide combined with 25 parts of zinc ammonia casein composition as a binder, these ingredients being mixed in water to a solid content of about 25-45% prior to coating. The coating may be thinned by diluting with 10 to 12% ammonia hydroxide. The zinc compound used in the zinc ammonia casein composition may be an oxide, carbonate or cyanide. The alkali-stabilized colloidal silica is in the form of dispersed particles having a particle size of 1 to 100 millimicrons, the particles being coated by the stabilizing alkali and an average molecular weight, as determined by light scattering, of at least 500,000. The present type of colloidal silica -is described in detail in U.S.A. Specifications 2,244,325, 2,574,902 and 2,597,872 and may be prepared by passing a silicate through an ion exchange resin to remove the alkali as described in U.S.A. Specification 2,244,325. The colloidal silica top coating must be used in an aqueous acid environment in order to provide the desired adhesive bond to the zinc ammonia casein composition with the zinc oxide-hydrous clay base coating. A preferred volatile acid is acetic acid, formic acid, propionic or butyric acid. Hardening resins such as urea formaldehyde resin or melamine formaldehyde resin or mixtures thereof may be used with the colloidal silica. U.S.A.
